The clearing and wiping standard procedure for information on writable disks
DOD 555.342.3-K (aka deletion of death) of the Department of Defense dictates the following:
- Rename the file to a name with a character up to the same length like the original filename,
then to a name with the character's complement,
then with a random character,
so that it's original name is wiped from the file-system.
- Overwrite the content of the file with a character,
then with the character's complement,
and then with a random character.
- Last but not least delete the file.
- Note: the standard outlines that this method is not suitable for TOP SECRET information.
TOP SECRET data wiping is only achievable by a Type 1 or 2 degauss of the disk, or by disintegrating,
incinerating, pulverizing, shreding, or melting the disk.
